On the worst birthday of my life, I come home to find my boyfriend in bed with another woman. Within hours, I’m drunk, homeless, and pledging to stay single forever. And that is when the dangerously sexy Seelie King rolls through town, looking for fae like me.

Every generation, the king holds a competition for Seelie queen. But for reasons he won’t explain, Torin is looking for a charade, not a real marriage. So when I drunkenly sling insults his way, I have his attention.

When Torin offers me fifty million to participate, I think, “What have I got to lose?” The answer turns out to be “my life,” because my competition will literally kill for the crown.

And the more time I spend with the seductive king, the harder it becomes to remember it’s all supposed to be fake. Now, my life—and my heart—are one the line.

What is Frost by C.N. Crawford about?

Ava Jones’s life is turned on it’s head when she catches her boyfriend cheating on her and it’s only made worse after a drunken run-in with the bachelor King of the Fae. But her ex-boyfriend is the least of her worries when she finds herself at the pointy end of a sword, fighting for a lie – or that’s what it was meant to be. It has trials, it has sword fights, and it has a whole lot of tension – like alot.

Pace

As with all of C.N. Crawford’s books I’ve read so far, Frost was a quick read. The plot sprinted through the 320 pages and it actually read like a much shorter book. My main issue was that I couldn’t find a good point to put it down which is probably why I read it in a few days. Frost by C.N. Crawford is definitely one to read when you can lock yourself away from your family for a weekend and shirk all adult/parental responsibilities (jokes, obviously).

Your next book boyfriend

C.N. Crawford has created a dynamic cast of characters that keeps you on your toes with a few surprise twists and turns. Torin, the MMC, is the painfully handsome Fae King that fits perfectly beside my other book boyfriends (Wrath, Casteel, Hades, Rowen, Hunt, Ruhn, Rhys – it’s a real party). He and Ava are two bulls draped in red stuck in a pit with no escape. But their ire slowly morphs into something else and causes all sorts of beautiful complications, especially where curses are concerned. Oh yes, did I mention Torin is also cursed, super fun! Crawford has cracked the door to Ava’s mysterious backstory which I’m excited to explore in book two. It’s a backstory that will most definitely cause a whole lot of delicious trouble for the pair. Yay!

Admittedly, the plot is a bit formulaic but, don’t fix what ain’t broken, right? It is very similar to the Demon Queen Trials Series (which I also loved) with the three trials, the mysterious past, and the court intrigue. But it’s still a really good read and perhaps Crawford reuses these plots points because it works so well. I will say that Frost by C.N. Crawford has its own modern take on the classic trials/contest trope that is quite amusing and unique but I won’t spoil it for you.

The tropes…

  • marriage of convenience
  • enemies(-ish) to lovers
  • trials/contest
  • forced proximity
  • royalty/court intrigue
  • hidden/secret identity
  • hidden power

Is she spicy?

Because of some plot complications, there isn’t a great deal of explicit spice but, good lord, is there tension. It’s definitely an adult novel and I’m so keen to see these two work around their circumstances and bump up the spice!

Add to your TBR if you like Stacia Stark, Everly Frost, Katee Robert, Jaymin Eve or if you enjoyed other C.N. Crawford novels.

Book Two of the Frost and Nectar series, Ambrosia, is due to be released in January 2023 and is available for pre-order on Amazon now!
